古代都市バビロニア
「バビロン」という言葉は、古代メソポタミアの巨大都市「バビロニア」が語源と思われます。（単行本１巻に「神の怒りに沈む都市」として「バビロン」の解説も載っていますね。）
この「バビロン」という都市名ですが、現代では賑やかで多様な都市を意味する言葉としても使われることがあるようです。
また、古代メソポタミアの「バビロン」という都市は、聖書でも有名な「バベルの塔」があった場所とも考えられています。
バベルの塔
バベルの塔の逸話はご存知の方も多いのではないでしょうか。
旧約聖書の創世記11章では、人々がバビロンに天に届くほどの高さのある「バベルの塔」を建設しようとしたところ、神の怒りを買っていまい、神は人々の言葉を混乱させて、同じ言語でお互いを理解できないようにし、人類を地球全体に散らばらせることで、塔の建設を中止させた。というお話です。
多種多様な人種が集まる東京に建てられた「東京タワー」は、現代のバベルの塔と言っても良いでしょう。
旧約聖書では、神の怒りによって「バベルの塔」の建設は中止となってしまいましたが、東京という現代の「バビロン」に建てられた「東京タワー」に、果たして神の怒りはどのような厄災を呼ぶのでしょうか・・。
憧れの地としての「東京タワー」
『東京BABYLON』の描かれた1990年代初頭は、まだバブルの好景気が残り、2000年代を目前に「ノストラダムスの大予言」などを代表としたオカルトブームが到来した時代でもあります。
そんな中、2012年に東京スカイツリーが完成するまでの実に50年近くもの間、日本で一番高い建物は東京タワーでした。
筆者もそうですが、地方出身者から見た東京の観光地といえば東京タワー。東京に住んだら、一度は行ってみたいと思った人も多かったはずです。
『東京BABYLON』の作中で、女優を目指して上京した女性（美空ひばりの本名と同じ「加藤かずえ」というキャラクーでした）の霊を除霊するというエピソードがありましたが、このエピソードの中で、地方から上京し、夢に敗れて自死してしまった女性の強い思いの残る場所として「東京タワー」が登場します。
東京に訪れる人々の夢や憧れの象徴であるともに、未練や怨念などの負の感情も集まりやすい場所である。そしてそのプラスとマイナスの感情が東京という現代の「バビロン」に集まってしまうことを、もはや誰も止めることはできません。
神が人々の言葉を混乱させるまでもなく、滅びに向かって他用性を受け入れ続ける都市。
これこそが作中でも星史郎の言っていた「この地球でただ一つ、滅びへの道を楽しんでいる都市」という意味ではないでしょうか。

Tokyo Tower, which was built in Tokyo, where a wide variety of people gather, can be said to be a modern-day Tower of Babel.
In the Old Testament, the construction of the “Tower of Babel” was canceled due to God’s wrath, but what kind of wrath will God’s wrath bring to the “Tokyo Tower” built in the modern “Babylon” called Tokyo? Are you going to call it a disaster?
“Tokyo Tower” as a place of longing
In the early 1990s, when “Tokyo Babylon” was drawn, the bubble economy was still booming, and the occult boom, represented by “Nostradamus’ prophecies”, had arrived just before the 2000s.
Meanwhile, Tokyo Tower was the tallest building in Japan for nearly 50 years until Tokyo Sky Tree was completed in 2012.
As is the case with the author, Tokyo Tower is the tourist spot in Tokyo seen from the point of view of people from rural areas. If you live in Tokyo, there must have been many people who wanted to go there once.

In addition to being a symbol of the dreams and aspirations of those who visit Tokyo, it is also a place where negative emotions such as regrets and grudges can easily gather. And no one can stop the positive and negative emotions from gathering in the modern “Babylon” of Tokyo.
A city that continues to accept other uses toward destruction without the need for God to confuse people’s language.
