東京BABYLONの主人公「皇 昴流」の名前について考察して見たいと思います。
I would like to consider the name of the main character of Tokyo Babylon, “Sumeragi Subaru”.
「皇」という漢字は、古くから天皇や皇室、皇位などを表す文字です。
The kanji character ‘皇’ has long been used to represent the emperor, the imperial family, and the imperial throne.
日本でもかなり珍しい苗字ですが、現在でも３０人ほど皇姓の方が実際にいるそうです。
It’s a rare family name even in Japan, but it seems that there are actually about 30 people with the ”皇” family name even now.
昴流の家系は13代続く陰陽師の家系なので、位の高さ、高貴さを「皇」という名字で表現しているのではないでしょうか。
The Subaru family is a family of 13 generations of Onmyoji*, so I think the surname “皇” expresses their high rank and nobility.
「昴」は一文字の場合、プレアデス星団というおうし座の星の集まりの和名です。
（余談ですが昴流の誕生日は２月１９日なので魚座です）
天文道（現代の占星術に近いようですが）を生業とする陰陽師の一族にあやかった、陰陽師らしい名前と言えるのではないでしょうか。
“Subaru” is the Japanese name for the group of Taurus stars called the Pleiades star cluster.
(As an aside, Subaru’s birthday is February 19th, so he’s Pisces.)
It can be said that it is a name that seems to be an onmyoji, after a family of onmyoji who make a living in astronomy (although it seems to be similar to modern astrology).
「流」は、流れる、広まり、なめらかなど一文字だとさまざまな意味があります。
“流” has various meanings, such as flowing, spreading, and smooth.
「昴」の一文字だけでも「Subaru」と読みますが、「流」（Ru）をくっつけて２文字にした理由は、バランスの良さと日本人っぽい名前らしさを出したのかなと思います。
Even just one letter of “昴” can be read as “Subaru”, but I think the reason why we combined “流Ru” to make it two letters is to create a well-balanced and Japanese-like name.
「皇 昴」でも「Sumeragi Subaru」と同じ読み方をすることはできるのですが、日本人の名前で、名字も下の名前も漢字一文字ずつというのは結構珍しいです。
It’s possible to read ‘皇 昴’ in the same way as ‘Sumeragi Subaru’, but it’s quite rare for a Japanese name to have １ kanji character for both the surname and the given name.
また、日本の感覚からすると「皇 昴」だと中国人の名前のように感じるため、一文字足して「皇 昴流」で「Sumeragi Subaru」と読ませたのかなと思います。
Also, from a Japanese point of view, “皇 昴” feels like a Chinese name, so I think that one character was added to make it read “皇 昴流” in the “Sumeragi Subaru style”.
